Bedwell picks up second-team All-SoCon honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore Katelyn Bedwell has been named to the All-Southern Conference Second Team at designated player, the league office announced Monday.
Bedwell finished the regular season as UNCG's second-leading hitter at .312 on the year. She leads UNCG with a career-high 11 home runs, tied for fifth-most in the SoCon and good for fourth-most in a single season in school history. She also has a career-high 39 RBI, which is seventh in the league and tied for eighth in a single season in UNCG history.
The Surrey, British Columbia, native has started all 53 games for UNCG so far, with 34 coming at designated player and 19 at catcher. She has four doubles and a triple and is second on the squad with a career-best .565 slugging percentage. She and teammate Eileen Horsmon are tied for the SoCon lead and are second nationally with five sacrifice flies.
Bedwell turned in 10 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI contests on the year. She had three games with at least three hits, including in back-to-back contests against North Carolina A&T and Gardner-Webb, and had five contests with at least three RBI, including a career-high five against the Lady Aggies in a contest in which she missed the cycle by just a single. She had a three-run home run and a two-run triple in the win over UNCG's crosstown rivals.
Bedwell also had a flair for the dramatic this season. She had four RBI and hit a solo homer with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Spartans to a 6-5 comeback win at Liberty on April 4, and her solo shot with one out in the bottom of the seventh gave UNCG an 8-7 walk-off win over Western Carolina on April 28.
A SoCon All-Freshman selection last season, Bedwell moved into UNCG's career top 10 in batting average and slugging percentage this season. She is eighth in school history with a .317 career average and is fourth with a .527 slugging percentage. She is tied for 13th in school history in triples (four) and home runs (12) and is eighth in school history with 15 runners thrown out trying to steal.
Bedwell's selection keeps alive UNCG's streak of having at least one All-SoCon pick in each of its 15 seasons in the league.
UNCG finished the 2012 regular season with a 21-32 overall mark and a 10-13 SoCon record, good for fourth in the league. The Spartans will meet tournament host and fifth-seeded Appalachian State at the SoCon Championship in Boone, N.C., on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The double-elimination tournament runs from Wednesday to Saturday.
