RADFORD, Va. – Eileen Horsmon knocked in all four runs in UNCG's 4-3, nine-inning win in game one but Radford took a 2-0 victory in game two as the Spartans split a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday.

Horsmon lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to score Alex Emeterio, who was placed on second to start the inning via the international tiebreaker rule, for what would prove to be the winning run.

Horsmon had UNCG's only two hits in game one, but she made them count. With the Spartans (17-28) trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Horsmon followed Emeterio's two-out walk with a double down the left field line to get UNCG on the board.

The Highlanders (25-14) got the run back in the bottom of the fifth on Nichole Beall's RBI double, but UNCG took advantage of some wildness by the RU pitching staff in the top of the sixth to tie the contest at 3.

Micalah Sacre issued a leadoff walk to Tatiana Alcala and was relieved by Stephanie Dameron, who walked Aisha Figueroa. After a sacrifice from Aubrey Baldwin, Emeterio drew another walk to load the bases. Horsmon then delivered a two-run single to tie the game.

The Highlanders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, with Beall serving as the catalyst. She led off the game with a double and eventually came in on Ryndee Ruch's groundout in the first. Beall then hit a solo homer in the third, her 10th of the season, to make it a two-run spread.

UNCG starter Cory Mattson worked all nine innings to pick up the win, improving to 11-14 on the year. She allowed three runs on six hits and five walks, striking out five.

Emily Norton (2-4) took the loss, allowing one run one unearned run on one hit in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

The Highlanders earned the split in game two, this time getting a three-hitter from Jackie Jenkins. Katelyn Bedwell had two of the Spartans' three safeties.

Jessie Hutchens hit a solo homer in the second inning to give Jenkins all the run support she would need, but the Highlanders doubled their advantage in the fourth on Hutchens' RBI groundout.

Bedwell had one-out singles in the second and seventh innings, but Jenkins retired the next two batters in order each time.

UNCG left two on in the sixth inning in what would prove to be its best scoring opportunity. After Kiah Ruffin led off the inning with a single, RU committed an error on Alcala's sacrifice attempt to put runners at the corners with no one out. After Alcala stole second, a fielder's choice erased Ruffin for the first out of the inning. Another fielder's choice took care of Alcala before Jenkins induced a lineout to end the frame unscathed.

Jenkins improved to 11-6 on the season. She did not walk a batter and struck out one.

Freshman Erica Navarette (5-11) took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings. She struck out six, one shy of her season high.

UNCG gets back into Southern Conference play with a three-game series at College of Charleston this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday followed by a single game Sunday with 1 p.m. starts both days.
