GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chattanooga used a six-run sixth inning to open up what had been a tight game to take a 9-1 win in six innings in game one of Saturday's Southern Conference doubleheader at the UNCG Softball Stadium. Game two was scoreless in the top of the third inning when play was suspended by rain. The teams will finish that contest Sunday, followed by the third and final game of the series.

UNCG (21-30, 10-11 SoCon) was within a pair of runs after five innings, but the Lady Mocs (35-14, 18-2 SoCon) saw their first seven batters of the sixth inning reach base to put the game into mercy rule territory.

Sarah Beth Roberts led off the frame with a walk, and Layne Rainey, Sara Poteat and Cheyenne Willis followed with singles to bring in the first run. Stephanie Rieck laced a double down the left field line that went off of a diving Alex Emeterio's glove, bringing in two more runs.

A fielder's choice allowed another run to score when UNCG couldn't get Poteat in a rundown between third and home, and Vivian Morimoto brought in two more runs on a double that knocked UNCG starter Cory Mattson from the game.

The Spartans then went to Josie Felix, who turned in her third straight strong relief appearance by retiring three of the next four batters to end the inning without further damage.

Chattanooga jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, getting an RBI single from Kasey Tydingco in the first inning but leaving the bases loaded before scoring twice in the second. Willis got the scoring started with an RBI triple, knocking in Poteat when center fielder Aubrey Baldwin collided with Emeterio in left center and the ball went off Baldwin's glove. Rieck followed with an RBI groundout to make it 3-0.

UNCG got a run back in the fifth inning but missed a chance for more. Dominique Madruga and Toni MacReynolds reached on errors to lead off the inning, but Chattanooga starter Taylor Deason got a strikeout for the first out. Aisha Figueroa reached on a bunt single to load the bases and Madruga came in on Baldwin's fielder's choice to bring the Spartans within two runs.

Another fielder's choice erased MacReynolds at home and Deason struck out Eileen Horsmon – who hit a grand slam against the Lady Mocs in a SoCon tournament game in 2010 – with the bases loaded to end the threat.

UNCG also had a chance to get on the board early in the contest but stranded a pair of runners in the first. Figueroa led off with a bunt single but was erased on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Horsmon singled up the middle, but the Spartans were unable to push a run across.

Figueroa was 3-for-3 with three infield singles to lead UNCG at the plate. Horsmon's first-inning single was UNCG's only other hit.

Willis was 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored to pace the Lady Mocs. Rieck, Morimoto and Poteat had two hits each.

Deason improved to a SoCon-best 21-7 on the year, allowing one run on four hits in six innings. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Mattson (13-15) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 12 hits and three walks in five-plus innings. Felix worked an inning of relief, allowing just one hit.

The teams were called off the field in game two with Chattanooga batting in the top of the third inning. After a 44-minute delay, the decision was made to postpone the contest until Sunday.

The Lady Mocs left the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, while UNCG couldn't cash in Katelyn Bedwell's leadoff double in the bottom half of the frame.

The game will resume Sunday at 1 p.m. with Chattanooga's Morimoto batting with Rieck on first and one out.

UNCG will honor senior manager Katelyn Dodson along with Emeterio and Mattson on Sunday.
