GREENSBORO, N.C. – Recently graduated senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Oregon/Rainier Senior) spent the summer playing and coaching with the Enköping Softball Club in Sweden.

Hanks’ season is scheduled to run for a couple more weeks as she comes back to the states on Sept. 2. According to Hanks, her team has started postseason play with a best-of-three-series. The Enköping club finished second during the regular season and just missed first place.

“It came down to one game and we lost by one run,” said Hanks. “It was a bummer but the team has made so many improvements even since the beginning of summer.”

Hanks is one of several Americans to play over in Sweden joining her on the Sweden club was former Sacred Heart softball player Annie Dreher. With their experience playing Division I softball, Hanks and Dreher help coach the team as well.

“I get along with Annie very well,” said Hanks. “Annie and I run practices three days a week, plus we have individuals with girls that need it. After we arrived in Sweden, we helped the team finish 10-2 in the last 12 games of the regular season.”

Hanks, a former all-conference pitcher with UNCG, has played numerous positions to help the team succeed including shortstop, third base, centerfield and hitting in the lineup. Hanks also played in a prestigious softball tournament in Prague, Czech Republic.

“I got to spend a week in Prague, Czech Republic, playing and coaching with the Swedish national team for Prague softball week,” Hanks said. “I had such a good time meeting all the girls on the team and it was just incredible to be able to do some traveling. Annie and I took a small trip to London, England which was also beautiful.”

Part of Hanks’ experience in Sweden allows her to help grow the sport of softball and after four short months she wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

“I am so happy I made the decision to come over here,” said Hanks. “There are so many things I miss in the states but I wouldn’t have traded this experience for anything.”

Hanks finished her career as a Spartan with 44 wins (sixth all-time), 36 complete games, eight saves (third all-time), 501.2 innings (ninth all-time) and 437 strikeouts (fourth all-time).
