LYNCHBURG, Va. – With less than two minutes left in the game, junior Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) scored on a breakaway to give UNCG women’s soccer a key 1-0 road win at Liberty Tuesday night.

In the 89th minute, White broke free for a one-on-one opportunity against Big South all-conference goalkeeper Holly Van Noord and White fired a low shot into the left corner for the game-winning goal. It was White's 12th career goal and fifth career game-winning goal.

UNCG improves to 1-2 on the season and Liberty falls to 1-1 with the loss. Both teams finished with 13 shots as the Spartans out shot Liberty 9-6 in the second half. The victory gives first year head coach Michael Coll his first at UNCG.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg/Penn State) picked up her first career shutout making three saves in the game.

In the second half, UNCG had a couple of scoring opportunities with White having a shot inside the box blocked in the 55th minute.

Sophomore Alexis Thomas fired a shot on goal but Liberty goalie Holly Van Noord made the save in the 58th minute. Less than a minute later, junior Ashley Eddleman (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) had a header shot go just wide inside the box off a corner kick.

In a physical first half, both teams couldn’t find the back of the net. Liberty led the shot total with seven shots but only two were on frame. The Spartans took four shots with one being on goal.

It marks the third-straight game that UNCG has kept an opponent off the scoreboard in the first half.

Freshman Hannah Hoeksema (Auckland, New Zealand/Avondale College) had a chance in the 11th minute after a pass from junior Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) but it went wide of the net.

Hoeksema led the Spartans with three shots, including one that was saved by Holly Van Noord. Buehler finished the half with two saves.

UNCG returns home to host Army as part of a doubleheader with the men’s soccer team starting at 6 p.m. against Army at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The men’s soccer team will play Campbell right after the conclusion of the women’s game.
