Womenís Cross Country Finishes Third At SoCon Championships 11-02-2013

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNCG women’s cross country team placed third overall at the 2013 Southern Conference Championships Saturday morning at Veterans Park in Birmingham, Ala. The Spartans had three runners earn First Team All-SoCon with top seven finishes and all five counting times were in the top 25 to finish with 62 total points. Furman won the team title with 48 total points while Elon was second with 50. 

Senior Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was the Spartans’ top finisher, placing fourth overall with a time of 17:49.64. Sumney’s fourth place finish marks the second time in her career she has notched a fourth place showing, matching her finish from 2011. She has three top seven showings in four SoCon Championship races in her career.

Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) turned in her top showing of her career with a sixth place finish. Saina finished in a time of 18:02.87, improving 39 spots in the standings and trimming almost 45 seconds off her SoCon Championship time last year as a freshman.

Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) rounded out the Spartans in the top 10 as she was seventh overall with a time of 18:08.80. This also marks the third time in her career she has placed in the top 10, finishing second in 2012 and fifth in 2011.

Senior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnson) recorded her best career finish in the SoCon Championships with a 21st place finish overall. Montague posted a time of 18:44.48, her top time this season. Freshman Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) was the final Spartans time counted as she finished 24th overall in her first ever SoCon Championship race. She picked up SoCon All-Freshman accolades with a time of 18:48.15.

Chattanooga’s Teghan Henderson won the individual title impressively with a time of 17:05.84, winning by 27 seconds over her nearest competitor Allie Buchalski of Furman.
