GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG Director of Athletics Kim Record announced the promotion of Chad Pearson to interim head coach for the cross country and track & field programs Monday. Pearson spent the past season as an assistant coach for the Spartans under Linh Nguyen, who was recently named the new head coach at the University of Toledo.

"Chad will help our program maintain the high level of competition we have become known for at UNCG and will continue the tradition that Linh developed for the Spartans," Record said. "His knowledge of our program and our student-athletes will help make this transition smooth for everyone involved. We are excited for the future of our cross country and track programs under Chad's guidance."

Pearson helped the Spartans record a strong showing last year as UNCG posted three Southern Conference individual champions and two All-America honorees. He helped coach junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) win the SoCon Cross Country Championships and a National Runner-Up finish in outdoor track, while Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) also claimed a National Runner-Up finish in outdoor track this spring.

"I would like to thank Ms. Kim Record, Chancellor Brady, Stacy Kosciak and the entire UNCG staff for their support throughout the process," Pearson said. "I want to thank them for giving me this great opportunity to continue working with our student-athletes here at UNCG. I am very excited to begin the season and hope to continue the success and tradition that Coach Nguyen has started at UNCG."

Pearson joined the Spartans after spending time as a volunteer assistant coach at Charlotte (2012) and North Carolina State (2010-11). He was also the graduate assistant coach at NC State from 2004-2006, working with both the cross country and track and field programs.

"Placing Chad in charge of the UNCG program is a great move and will provide a seamless transition for all involved," Nguyen said. "Chad has done a great job since he has come to UNCG and I think he is ready for this type of responsibility. He has shown to be a great recruiter and has high-level competitive experience. The athletes will thrive under his leadership."

Pearson was a standout at NC State where he was a three-time NCAA All-America honoree in cross country and track and field. He helped the Wolfpack win back-to-back ACC cross country team championships as well as earning Academic All-America honors during his career. Pearson still holds the school record in the outdoor track 10,000-meter distance when he posted a time of 28:37.95 and helped the Wolfpack finish 10th place in the NCAA Cross Country Championships his senior year.

Pearson was a United States Olympic Trials track and field qualifier and was the United States 10,000-meter Road National Champion. Additionally, he was a member of the United States Junior National Cross Country Team.

"Chad is a huge asset for UNCG and a terrific role model for the student-athletes," long-time NC State head coach Rollie Geiger said. "His goal since graduating college has been to be a head coach. He has put in the time and commitment into his work in preparation for this position. He came to NC State as an average high school athlete and ended up an All-American who still holds school records at NC State. He knows from his own experience the commitment you have to have to be successful at the collegiate level. This is a great fit for Chad and UNCG."
