Women's Cross Country Picked Fifth In Preseason SoCon Poll 08-21-2013
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's cross country program has been picked to finish fifth the 2013 Southern Conference championship this season in a vote by the league's head coaches. The 2013 season will be the first year for the Spartans under the director of interim head coach Chad Pearson.

The Spartans picked up 61 total points in the preseason poll while also garnering two first-place votes. Elon was tabbed as the preseason favorite with 93 points and five first-place votes while Furman was second with 86 points and four top votes.

UNCG is led into the 2013 season by senior twins Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity). Chelsea finished third at the SoCon Championship race last season in cross country and placed 15th in the NCAA Southeast Regional, just missing out on a bid to the NCAA Championships. Shaina redshirted last season but earned All-SoCon honors in 2011 when she placed fifth in the league championships and 31st in the NCAA Southeast Regional.

The Spartans open the 2013 season Aug. 30 at the Wake Forest Relays. This year's Southern Conference Championships will be held Nov. 2 in Birmingham, Ala.
