MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – UNCG senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished third overall at the 2012 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships to lead the Spartans to an eighth place finish at the at the Laurel Hill Plantation Saturday.
"I am very pleased with the women's race today," head coach Linh Nguyen
said. "Like the men, I feel that they did a good job of following the race plan. We had quite a few PR's today and that's what you hope to see during the championship season. I think our younger women got a great feel for what a championship race is like on the college level and it's going to serve them very well next year."
Sumney improved her position two spots from last season as she finished the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17:27.47. She finished behind a pair of Samford runners in Lauren D'Alessio (16:57.65) and Rachel Roberts (17:19.32).
Appalachian State won the team title, scoring 64 points with five counting times in the top 20 of the standings. Elon was second with 68 points, while Samford finished third with 97 points. The Spartans posted an eighth place finish with 211 points as all five of their counting times finished in the top 62.
Junior Kelly Montague
(Garner, N.C./West Johnston) was the Spartans' second finisher, posting a time of 18:43.28 to finish 41st
overall. Freshman Lydia Saina
(Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) shaved 33 seconds off of her preseason-best time, posting a time of 18:47.29 to finish in 45th
place. Saina brought her career-best time down for 19:20.30 at the Greater Louisville Classic.
Freshman Emilee Hensel
(Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) also posted a career-best time turning in a mark of 19:31.81 to finish in 60th
place. Hensel surpassed her previous time by 41 seconds off her mark of 20.12.7 set at the Greater Louisville Classic. Fellow freshman Katlyn Ayers
(Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) became the third Spartan rookie to set a new personal-best, improving three seconds on her time with a 19:37.52 mark for 62nd
