GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's and women's cross country teams head to Elon Saturday, for the Elon Invitational. The women's 5K will be underway at 9 a.m. followed by the men's 8K at 9:45 a.m. with awards at 10:30 a.m.

"This will be our first race at true-race distance," said cross country head coach Linh Nguyen. "We're still not going to run our full team. We're holding some of our top people out. This will give us a better idea of where everybody really is, and where our freshmen are, especially with the men being their first time in the 8K distance. We've seen them in practice running workouts and we ran the Wake Forest relays, but this is going to be our first real chance to see them in an actual race situation."

UNCG, Elon, Ferrum, Methodist, North Carolina A&T and William Peace will be competing at the meet. Tyron Alston, Dylan Belles, Josh Crawford, Brandon Cain, Taylor Day, Abraham Kemboi, John Elwood, Chris Murphy, Myles White and Eric Williams are running for the men's team this Saturday, while Katlyn Ayers, Emilee Hensel, Shannon Hall, Meredith Hicks, Kelly Montague, Lydia Saina, Chelsea Sumney and Haley Wenos will be competing for the women's team. Shaina Sumney will also run unattached for the Blue and Gold

The Spartans started of the 2012 season two weeks ago at Demon Deacon Quad in Winston-Salem. The team used the relay-styled meet as a workout to see where the team stood as far as fitness.

Last season at the Elon Invitational, Paul Chelimo took top honors and led the men's team to win a team title. Chelimo broke the school record by 40 seconds earning him first place, while Paul Katam finished second with a time that also beat the previous school record. Joey Thompson and Abraham Kemboi weren't far behind as they finished in third and fourth, while Tyron Alston and Brian Carrington also finished in the top-ten.

As for the women, Ashley Schnell was the top individual in the women's race for the Spartans. Schnell took first place and set a new school record. Kerry Hartman placed eighth, while Michelle Chewens and Kelly Montague placed in the top-20.

Kemboi, who placed No. 7 in the 2011 SoCon Championship, will lead the men this weekend, while Chelsea Sumney will lead the women after placing No. 5 in the 2011 SoCon Championship. Chelimo and Katam will not be participating in the event.
