GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG cross country student-athletes Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) and Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) have been named this week's Spartan Top Performers after both winning individual tiles at the Elon Invitational. The Spartan Top Performer is chosen weekly from all sports in season and will run through the 2012-13 UNCG athletics campaign.
Kemboi won the men's 8,000-meter race Saturday morning in a time of 25:29, claiming his first individual title of his UNCG career, surpassing his previous top finish of fourth place last year at the same event. He became the third straight Spartan to win the individual race at the Elon Invitational, joining Paul Chelimo (2011) and Mike Koech (2010), as he defeated Elon's Luis Vargas by eight seconds.
Sumney won the women's 5,000-meter race in a time of 17:44, also claiming her first individual title of her career. She posted a fifth place finish last year at the Southern Conference championships. She extended the Spartans' winning streak in the women's race at the Elon Invitational to three straight years as Ashley Schnell won the event in 2010 and 2011. She won this year's race by 34 seconds over her closest competitor, Haylee Dawe of Elon.
