GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2012 UNCG cross country schedule was released Friday and will take the defending Southern Conference champion UNCG men's and women's cross country teams to six events prior to the SoCon Championships held October 27 in Charleston, S.C. The Spartan men won the conference title by 47 points while the women took home a 45-point victory as UNCG dominated the event last fall.
"I am very excited about the schedule we have set up this year," head coach and reigning SoCon Coach of the year Linh Nguyen said. "We will start off low key early to just get in some good, hard efforts and then really start to challenge ourselves beginning at the end of September. I think our last two regulars season meets will set us up well going into the championship part of the season and should give us a really good idea of where we stand as a team as well as for some of our top individuals."
The Spartans open the season August 31 as they take part in the Demon Deacon Quad hosted by Wake Forest. After a date at the Elon Invitational September 15, the Spartans will split up into two events September 29. UNCG will send runners to the Greater Louisville Classic while also participating in the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational.
The Spartans will also have two events October 12 as they will travel to either the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., or the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Madison, Wisc., in the final tune-up for the SoCon Championships.
The team will then head to the NCAA Southeast Regional which will be held down the road in Charlotte November 9. The NCAA National Championships will be held in Louisville November 17.
"The NCAA Regional Championship meet will be in Charlotte this year so I'm hoping we have a strong contingent of fans out to support us as we attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet," Nguyen said.
The Spartan men are anchored by the return of reigning SoCon Runner of the Year Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemet Boys School) as well as reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho). Chelimo also earned NCAA All-America honors last year after finishing 13th in the national championships.
The UNCG women are anchored by sisters Chelsea Sumney
(Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Shaina Sumney
(Washington, Pa./Trinity) who finished fifth and seventh in the SoCon Championships last fall.
