Chelsea Sumney Named SoCon Women's Runner Of The Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) has been named the Southern Conference Women's Runner of the Week for her performance the weekend of Sept. 15-16, the league office announced Wednesday. This is the first conference weekly award for Sumney in her career and the first since Ashley Schnell earned the honors twice last season.

Sumney won the Elon Invitational with a time of 17:44, only the third sub-18:00 time in course history. She led the race from start to finish and bested the second-place runner by 34 seconds to register her first collegiate cross country win. She extended the Spartans' winning streak in the women's race at the Elon Invitational to three straight years as Ashley Schnell won the event in 2010 and 2011. She won this year's race by 34 seconds over her closest competitor, Haylee Dawe of Elon.
 
The Blue and Gold will return to competition Sept. 29 with two events. The team will run at either the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., or the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational.
