UNCG’s Chelimo wins men’s race at Paul Short Run
BETHLEHAM, Pa. – UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo led from wire-to-wire on Friday as he took top invidividual honors in the men's race and Ashley Schnell turned in a top-15 performance for the women at the Paul Short Run.
In a race that saw seven top-25 programs nationally, Chelimo took off from the beginning to win the men's race with a time of 23:55. Although his time was 15 seconds off his school record he set two weeks ago, his time was more than enough for the win as he finished 17 seconds ahead of second place.
Paul Katam (51st), Joey Thompson (66th) and Abraham Kemboi (88th) also had nice runs for the men as they all turned in top-100 finishes.
"Paul Chelimo just announced himself as one of the best runners in the region today," said coach Linh Nguyen. "He took the lead in this race from the gun and never looked back. To win against a field like this and never be slightly challenged is quite an accomplishment.
"We were hoping for a little more as a team because we felt we were top-10 material coming into the race. Unfortunately, with over 400 runners in the race, our other guys just got buried too deep in the field early and couldn't make up the distance. I feel very good about where we are right now and i think we'll be where we need to be in six weeks."
Schnell paced the women's team once again as she completed the 6k course in a time of 20:58 to finish in 15th place overall out of just under 400 runners. Her time was just 10 seconds off of the school record she set last year at the NCAA Regionals where she earned All-Region accolades.
"Ashley had a great race today," said Nguyen. "Most of the women she was running with have been All-Americans or very close. She continues to impress me every time out. I think that similar to the men, the women suffered a little due to the large size of the field. Ginny and Kerry both ran very well, moving up the entire race. We beat some good teams today but feel we can be better. We'll get back to work and come out stronger in two weeks."
Members of the Spartan team who didn't compete on Friday will run at the Hagan Stone XC Classic on Saturday.
