ELON, N.C. – Paul Chelimo took top honors in the men's race as he helped the men's team to a team title and Ashley Schnell was the top individual in the women's race for UNCG on Saturday at the Elon Invitational.

Chelimo shattered the previous school record by 40 seconds after turning in a time of 23:40 to lead a Spartan 1-4 finish. Paul Katam wasn't far behind as he finished in second place with a time of 24:09 that would have also beat the previous school-best.

Joey Thompson and Abraham Kemboi finished in third and fourth, respectively, while Tyron Alston and Brian Carrington each finish in the top-10, as well.

"I'm very happy with our men today," said coach Linh Nguyen. "Chelimo and Katam controlled the race the whole way and looked very good. Our depth is improved this year and we have strength up front, which will be important in larger meets. I feel good about where we are this early in the season and I think this team has the potential to our best ever. Having three guys break the course record is never a bad thing."

Schnell also set a new school record as her time of 17:19 was good enough for first place at the meet. She bested her own school record that she set at the Greater Louisville Classic last season by 18 seconds.

Kerry Hartman had a nice race as she finished in eighth place in a time of 18:21, while Michelle Chewens and Kelly Montague each turned in top-20 performances.

"I think the meet went very well for our women," said Nguyne. "We ran without three of our top five runners today, but the team really stepped up and rose to the challenge. Ashley is obviously in great shape. She's extremely motivated to do well in her last year and that showed today. Breaking the course record by 30 seconds is quite impressive in the first meet of the season. From top to bottom, the women raced aggressively and ran tough. It's a great start and I think we can still get much better."

The Spartans will return to competition on Sept. 30 at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.
