NEW ORLEANS, La. – UNCG senior Ashley Schnell was named an All-Academic honoree by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2011 cross country season, the organization announced on Thursday.

Schnell was just one of 104 honorees nationwide and the only runner from the Southern Conference to earn the award.

In order to qualify for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the top 15 (or top 10 percent) in the NCAA regional.

Schnell has a perfect 4.0 GPA in music with a concentration in instrumental performance and earned all-region accolades after finishing in fifth at the NCAA Southeast Regional.

This season, Schnell was named the SoCon Women's Runner of the Year for the second straight season. She became just the seventh runner in league history to win more than one SoCon individual title. Her time at the SoCon Championships was the fastest in conference championship history, as well.

She earned all-region honors for the second time this season and earned a bid to the NCAA Championships where she finished in 66th place.
