Women’s Cross Country Heads To SoCon Championships Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s cross country team hits the road this weekend for the 2013 Southern Conference Championships which will be hosted by Samford at Veterans Park in Birmingham, Ala. The women’s 5,000-meter race is set for a 10:45 a.m. start after the men’s race.

The Spartans will be led by the senior sister duo of Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) Saturday. The duo has posted four top 10 finishes during their careers and boast the top two times in the SoCon this season in the 5,000-meter distance.

Shaina has the league’s fastest time at the distance with a 17:21.00 mark set at the Panorama Farms Invitational. She redshirted last season but placed seventh in the 2011 SoCon Championships with a personal-record time of 17:17.41. She turned in a fourth place finish in the 2010 SoCon Championships with a time of 17:56.41. She has earned SoCon Runner of the Week honors this year after winning the Elon Invitational with a time of 17:36.

Chelsea owns the second best time in the 5,000-meter race this season, posting a 17:21.30 finish at the Panorama Farms Invitational. She finished third at the SoCon Championships last season with a time of 17:27.47, finishing with All-Conference accolades. She notched a fifth place showing in 2011 when she recorded a personal-record time of 17:12.80, helping the Spartans to the team title.

Sophomore Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) rounds out the Spartans’ title contenders this year. Saina’s time of 17:39.00 at the Elon Invitational this year is the third fastest time in the 5,000-meter distance by any runner in the league. She has continually improved this year, setting personal-best times in the 5,000-meter and 6,000-meter distances. Last year, she placed 45th in the SoCon Championships with a time of 18:47.29.
