GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer solidified its position in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament Friday night as the Spartans posted a 1-0 victory over visiting Mercer at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The win improves the Spartans to 4-2-2 in league play, clinching the No. 3 seed in the tournament and assuring the Spartans of both a first round bye and a home game in the quarterfinals set for Saturday, October 28.

The Spartans (7-7-3, 4-2-2 SoCon) sit alone in third place with 14 points, four in front of fourth place Mercer and Western Carolina with just one game remaining in the regular season. The Spartans close out the regular season Sunday afternoon host The Citadel at 2 p.m. The game will be senior day as UNCG will honor its senior class of Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State), Hannah Hoeksema (Auckland, New Zealand), Regan Lehman (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) and Melanie Spensiero (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) prior to the game.

Redshirt freshman forward Kaley Tucker (Littleton, Colo./Thunder Ridge) scored the game’s lone goal in the 38th minute of action. Tucker got the ball at the side of the 18-yard box and made a move beating a Mercer defender to create space. She fired a bending shot past Mercer goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert into the side netting for her second goal of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) and the Spartans’ defense held the Bears in check for most of the game, posting the Spartans’ sixth shutout of the season. Tyler-Cooper finished with six saves on the night but none bigger than one in the 49th minute of play. Sarah Adcock ripped a shot from 20-yards out that was headed for the top corner but Tyler-Cooper was able to push it over the cross bar and out of play.

The Spartans best chance in the second half came in the 52nd minute of play off a free kick as Cienna Rideout (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) was hauled down at the top of the 18-yard box for a near penalty kick. The ball was placed at the top of the 18-yard box and Lehman fired a shot past the Mercer wall but it grazed the outside of the post to keep it a one-goal contest.
