GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG was outlasted Friday night in a tough and physical match at the UNCG Soccer Stadium, falling to Longwood 1-0 to move to 2-4-1 on the season.
“Longwood is a typical college soccer team,” said head coach Michael Coll. “They’re tough, fast and committed and we didn’t match that tonight. We weren’t dangerous at all.”
The Spartans nearly grabbed an early lead in the fourth minute, when an Ashton Duty (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson) corner kick was punched away by Lancer keeper Maria Kirby right onto the head of Emily Jensen (Nelson, New Zealand/Santa Clara). Jensen’s header was heading for the back of the net but LWU was able to clear the ball off the line to keep the score tied.
The Lancers spent more than the first 30 minutes of the game chasing their first shot but took full advantage when they were able to find some space. Gathering a pass from Kennedy Culbreath, Sheyenne Stretz dribbled past the UNCG back line and placed a laser right under the cross bar and past the outstretched hands of Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albamarle) to put the Lancers up 1-0 in the 37th minute.
“It was a good strike,” stated Coll. “They’ve scored a few goals like that this year. In fact, one of their goals last week was on the Sportscenter top-10. But that was on the scouting report that this team is a very good shooting team from distance and we learned the hard way that we have to take these scouting reports very seriously.”
From there the Spartans were playing catch up the rest of the night. UNCG turned up the pressure in the second half but was unable to find an equalizer.
With long bouts of possession tough to come by, neither team produced a bevy of chances. UNCG outshot the Lancers 12-10 and won the corner kick battle 5-2. However, whenever she was needed Kirby was able to make the big stop for Longwood, collecting eight saves on the night.
The Spartans won’t have to wait long to have an opportunity to bounce back, hosting VCU on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network.
