GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG made the trip down to Tallahassee, Florida always knowing that the challenge would be tough. No. 15 Florida State didn’t disappoint Friday night, handing the Spartans a 3-0 loss to open the 2017 season.
Well aware of the offensive firepower of the Seminoles, UNCG played a deep defensive line throughout the game, deciding to take its chances on what few counter-strike opportunities may present themselves. As such, FSU controlled possession all game long, ultimately outshooting UNCG 29-4.
Facing an onslaught of shots, the Spartan goalkeeping tandem of Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) and Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albamarle) did all they could to keep the score tight. The Spartans combined for eight saves on the night, including four from Buehler and a pair from Tyler-Cooper.
The Seminoles struck in the 13th minute of the affair as Deyna Castellanos finished from close in front of goal to open up scoring. Just five minutes later, Castellanos again put a goal past Buehler, redirecting a ball in front of net and slotting it home.
The Spartans were able to hold off the barrage from FSU for much of the rest of the contest but in the 81st minute UNCG committed a penalty and there was no doubt who would take the shot from the spot. Castellanos took command of the situation and finished off her hat trick to close out the victory for the Noles.
UNCG returns to action on Monday, travelling to the Queen City to take on the 49ers of Charlotte at 7:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on CUSA.TV.
