SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team was picked to finish third in the annual Southern Conference preseason poll, which was compiled from a vote taken of the conference's 10 head coaches and officially released Thursday by the SoCon office.

Sophomore defender Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda’s Collegiate) was selected to the Preseason All-SoCon team.

Furman was predicted to win the league after garnering 8 of 10 first-place votes and 80 points in the poll, followed Samford with 71.

The Spartans, who finished the 2013 regular season in third place with a 5-2-3 record, landed in third position in the poll. Wofford was fourth with 48 points, followed by new member Mercer in fifth with 47 points. Western Carolina was sixth (43) with returning member ETSU (39), The Citadel (25), Chattanooga (23), and VMI (9) rounding out the poll.

A preseason pick as a defender, Brown landed on the All-Freshman team after scoring three goals with two assists while playing outside back on the defense. She was a key part of the UNCG defense that had 10 shutouts last season.

The 2014 SoCon Women’s Soccer Championship will include all 10 members, with first-round matches between seeds 7-10 on campus sites on Oct. 29, followed by quarterfinals on campus sites on Nov. 1-2. The semifinals and final will be played at Western Carolina’s Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C., on Nov. 7 and 9, respectively.

The Blue and Gold officially open the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 22 at home against in-state foe Charlotte at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Two days later, UNCG takes on SEC opponent Georgia at 2 p.m. in Athens, Ga.
