The UNCG women's soccer team has released its 2014 schedule that features a road contest against the West Virginia Mountaineers, who were ranked eighth last season, and two other NCAA Tournament participants.

Women's Soccer Announces 2014 Schedule

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team has released its 2014 schedule that features a road contest against the West Virginia Mountaineers, who were ranked eighth last season, and two other NCAA Tournament participants. The Spartans finished with 10-plus wins for the second-straight season in 2013 and finished third in the Southern Conference.

Led by first-year head coach Michael Coll, the 10-game non-conference slate features two NCAA tournament teams in Liberty (Big South Tournament champs) and West Virginia (Big 12 Tournament champs). Three other non-conference opponents had 11 or more wins in Georgia (12-7-1), Charlotte (12-7-1) and James Madison (15-5-1).

The Spartans finished third in the Southern Conference last season after going 10-6-4 that included a 5-2-3 SoCon mark. UNCG will play an exhibition contest on the road against Ohio on Thursday, Aug. 14 at noon in Athens, Ohio.

The Blue and Gold officially open the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 22 at home against in-state foe Charlotte at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Two days later, UNCG takes on SEC opponent Georgia at 2 p.m. in Athens, Ga.

The Spartans will next face the defending Big South Tournament champion Liberty on the road Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va. The Flames defeated UNCG 1-0 last season at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG then welcomes Army for a home game on Friday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men’s soccer team who will play Campbell at 8 p.m.

UNCG heads out on the road to take part in the West Virginia 90-minute Classic held in Morgantown, WVa. September 5-7. The Spartans will face Indiana State Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. and will finish the tournament against West Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.  The Mountaineers finished the 2013 season with a No. 8 national ranking. West Virginia won the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles en route to a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.

The Blue and Gold return home for a four-game home stand starting with East Carolina Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans take on ACC foe NC State Sunday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. A week later, UNCG faces local rival High Point on Sept. 19 before taking on James Madison Sept. 21 to complete the home stand.

On Sept. 26, the Spartans will open the SoCon schedule with first-year member Mercer on the road in Macon, Ga. at 7 p.m.  The Bears finished with a 10-8-3 record last season in the Atlantic Sun Conference. UNCG next faces The Citadel Sunday, Sept. 28 in Charleston, S.C. at 2 p.m.

UNCG will face first-year member VMI Sunday, Oct. 5 on the road in Lexington, Va. at 2 p.m. The Spartans play their first home SoCon game against Chattanooga on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and will host Samford on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The Blue and Gold head back on the road to face Western Carolina on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and will face new SoCon member ETSU on Oct. 19 in Johnson City, Tenn. at 1 p.m. The Bucs had a 7-9-2 record in the Atlantic Sun conference last season.

The Spartans end the SoCon regular season with two home matches against Furman on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. before taking on Wofford on Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. The Paladins are the defending regular season and tournament champs while the Terriers knocked out UNCG in the first round of the SoCon Tournament last year winning a penalty kick shootout, 5-4.

The top four seeds host SoCon Championship quarterfinal contests on Nov. 1 or Nov. 2 before the semifinals and finals take place in Cullowhee, N.C. on Nov. 7 and 9, respectively.
