SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNCG outdoor track and field team wrapped up day two of the 2014 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Spartanburg, S.C., in sweltering heat. The women’s program finished in ninth place with 20 total points while the men’s program was tied for eighth with five points.
Women’s Track Senior Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was the Spartans’ top point-getter in day two, joining her twin sister Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) with a second-place showing at the championships. Shaina finished second in the 5,000-meter race, picking up eight team points for the Spartans. Her time of 17:03.10 was just behind champion Teghan Henderson of Chattanooga, who clocked in at 17:00.62.
Chelsea, who placed second in the 3,000-meter steeple chase Saturday, picked up one point for the team standing Sunday as she was eighth in the 5,000-meter race. She turned in a time of 17:45.07 while sophomore Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) was just out of the points with an 11th place showing at 18:04.48.
Sophomore Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS), who advanced to the finals of the 1,500-meter race with the eighth qualifying time, finished 11th in the finals Sunday. Jensen turned in a time of 4:59.09. Sophomore Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) rounded out the Spartans’ point-getters at the Championships with an eighth place showing in the steeplechase with a time of 11:28.34.
Men’s Track Senior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) was the lone Spartan in the finals Sunday after advancing in day one in the 1,500-meter distance. Alston notched an 11th-place finish in the race with a time of 4:02.44.
The Spartan men picked up five points in the team standings on day one as junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) placed fourth overall in the 10,000-meter event. Belles posted his best career finish in the SoCon Outdoor Championships with a time of 31:16.03.
