Women's Tennis Falls to Elon, 4-0 in SoCon Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNCG women’s tennis team battled tough but fell to fourth-seeded Elon, 4-0, Thursday at the Southern Conference quarterfinals at the Champions Club.

UNCG falls to 8-13 on the season while Elon improves to 13-8.  

The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead after winning the first two doubles matches. Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./Clover) and Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) fell to Jordan Johnston and Barbora Lazarova, 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Frida Jansaker and Maria Camara Ruiz clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 victory against freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) and senior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleji) at No. 2 doubles.

Junior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) were leading 6-3 when the point was decided.

Elon took a 2-0 lead after Johnston defeated Yurtkuran, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Khoury won in straight sets against Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

With the Spartans having won first sets on three courts, the Phoenix clinched the match as Lazarova defeated Gammie, 6-4 7-5 at No. 4 singles.

Falcon won the first set 6-4 before the match was decided and Franco won her first set 7-6. Grinberg was about to play a third set after splitting the first two sets 6-3, 5-7.
