Softball Falls in Doubleheader against Western Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team lost two tough games against Western Carolina Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans lost game one 3-1 and fell in game two 4-3.
The Spartans are 17-23 with a 3-11 SoCon mark while the Catamounts improve to 17-24, 7-7 in conference play. The series concludes with a single game Sunday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
Western Carolina 3, UNCG 1 In game one, the Catamounts held on to defeat the Spartans 3-1 in a pitching duel. Jordan Garrett (8-12) picked up the win after throwing six innings and allowed just one earned run on two hits. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) took the loss after throwing a complete game and allowed one earned run with five strikeouts. Taylor Sigmon picked up her SoCon-leading fifth save after getting out of trouble in the seventh inning. Sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) worked a walk to start the frame. After two strikeouts, pinch hitter Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison) lined a single through the infield. Sigmon sealed the win with a groundout to end the game. Western Carolina scored two runs in the first inning off two hits and a UNCG error. Amelia Griffin had an infield single to start the game. Griffin moved up to second off a wild pitch. Courtney Price walked before Kara Salvo struck out swinging. With one out, Griffin stole third and came home off a throwing error. Taylor Sigmon earned a RBI groundout to give the Catamounts a 2-0 lead. The Catamounts added an insurance run in the sixth inning. With one out, Sigmon reached on an error and Karley Harkey worked a walk. After a wild pitch, Heather Chastain earned an RBI groundout to give Western Carolina a 3-0 advantage. UNCG cut the lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning after a sacrifice fly from sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas). Classmate Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) started the rally with a single to left field. After an illegal pitch, Geiner moved to third off a groundout to the catcher. Vega picked up her 24th RBI of the season with the sacrifice fly. Western Carolina 4, UNCG 3 In game two, the Catamounts turned a costly error into two unearned runs to take game two against UNCG, 4-3. Courtney Buchanan (6-6) picked up the win throwing four innings allowing three earned runs off five hits. Sigmon earned her sixth save of the season. Lacey Leary (5-4) took the loss after throwing 4.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs. Lindsay Thomas finished the game 2-for-4 with a three-run home run. UNCG took an early 3-0 lead after a three-run home run from Lindsay Thomas, her fifth of the season. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) leadoff the game by being hit by a pitch and Vega followed with a walk. Lindsay Thomas picked up three more runs batted in giving her 26 on the season. Western Carolina cut into the lead with a sacrifice fly from Chastain to make the score 3-1. Sigmon walked and Harkey singled to start the inning. After a wild pitch, Chastain lined a RBI sacrifice fly to left field to score a run. In the fifth inning, the Catamounts scored three runs to pull ahead 4-3 off three hits and a UNCG error. A one out double by Makenzi McAteer started the rally. Griffin singled to the shortstop and Salvo singled through the infield to cut the lead to 3-2. Western Carolina took the lead off a dropped fly ball allowing two runners to come home. In the seventh inning, the Spartans put the tying run on second base after a leadoff single from Lindsay Thomas but back-to-back groundouts ended the threat giving Western Carolina the series victory with the sweep.
