Women's Tennis Drops Non-Conference Match to MTSU, 4-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team fell 4-0 to Middle Tennessee State Saturday night at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

UNCG sits at 5-9 overall while MTSU improves to 8-6 on the season.

The Spartans fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point after Middle Tennessee State won two of the three matches. At No. 2 doubles, senior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleji) and Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) earned a 8-5 victory against Jesse Grace and Irina Constantinide. The Blue Raiders won the last two doubles matches in tiebreakers, 8-7. Nayara Moraes and Tiffany William took down Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./Clover) at No. 1 doubles 8-7 (7-4). In the final doubles match, Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) fell just short 8-7 (7-5) against Flavia Nagayama and Sarah Sediri at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Moraes won in straight sets against Gammie 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. William made it 3-0 Middle Tennessee State after a 6-3, 6-3 win against Anane.

Grace clinched the victory after defeating Falcon, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

The final three matches went unfinished due to the match being indoors. Franco was leading in the third set, 2-6, 6-2, 4-3 against Constantinide at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) had split two sets 1-6, 6-4 against Nagayama at No. 5 singles.

Sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) split two sets against Sediri, 6-3, 4-6 at No. 6 singles.

The Spartans will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina Sunday, Mar. 30 at 1 p.m.
