Baseball Falls To Princeton In Series Finale

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Princeton scored five times in the first inning and rolled to an 11-1 victory over UNCG Sunday in a rain-shortened series finale inside the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The contest was called after eight innings due to steady rain that developed in the Triad area. The Spartans fall to 9-10 overall with the loss while the Tigers improve to 3-7.

Senior RHP Dylan Thompson (0-2) (Snow Camp, N.C./Guilford Technical CC) was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits over two innings pitched. He walked four and struck out one of the 15 batters he faced. Keelan Smithers (1-0) picked up the win for Princeton, throwing seven innings and allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Offensively, freshman catcher Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) recorded a hit in his only at bat while also tallying UNCG’s only run batted in. Additionally, junior infielder Jordan McDonald (Perth, Australia/Chattanooga State) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

As a team, the Spartans managed six hits – all from different players. The Tigers racked up 13 base knocks but also committed two errors.

The day started off well for Thompson as he struck out leadoff hitter Alec Keller. However, Princeton sent nine batters to the dish in the top of the first and produced three hits to stake itself to a 5-0 advantage. The Tigers tacked on an unearned run in the top of the third on a Paul Tupper RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0.

Princeton kept the bats going in the top of the fifth, notching four runs on five hits to move in front 10-0. A two-RBI single by Tyler Servais and a two-RBI double by Danny Baer accounted for the scores. Servais would add another run on a sac fly to make it 11-0 after the top of the sixth.

The Blue and Gold scored its only run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Kusz RBI single that plated McDonald who reached base via a walk. That would wrap up the scoring as the umpires called the teams off the field upon the completion of the eighth inning.

UNCG returns to action Wednesday, March 19, as the Spartans welcome Maryland-Eastern Shore to the UNCG Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
