Women's Tennis Drops Tough 4-3 Match to Stetson
DELAND, Fla. – The UNCG women’s tennis team tried to rally from 2-0 down but fell just short to Stetson, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
UNCG falls to 3-5 on the season and Stetson improves to 8-1.
The Spartans fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point after Stetson won two of the three matches. At No. 3 doubles, Eveline Lepinay and Lindsey Cable defeated Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), 8-2. The Hatters clinched the point with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles from Diana Bukajeva and Isabella Fernandez over Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./Clover) and Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School).
In the final doubles match at No. 2 doubles, senior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleji) and Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) took down Maya Blue Stauffer-MacDowell and Cari Berry, 8-5.
In singles, Bukajeva gave Stetson a 2-0 lead after defeating Anane, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Gammie cut the lead to 2-1 after defeating Fernandez in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
At No. 5 singles, Berry won in straight sets against sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), 6-1, 6-4.
Franco gave the Spartans their second point with an easy victory at No. 4 singles against Stauffer-MacDowell, 6-1, 6-0.
In the final two matches, both went the distance as Carolina Meregalli clinched the victory for Stetson with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 win against Sutherland at No. 6 singles. Falcon was able to win her match at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 against Andrea Crespo.
The Spartans will head to Miami, Fla. to face FIU Thursday, Mar. 13 at noon.
