Women’s Soccer Summer League Wrap-up
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Several UNCG women's soccer players have been fine tuning their games for the upcoming 2013 soccer season by playing in summer leagues throughout the east coast.
Five Spartans finished up play in the W-League, which is broken up into four conferences with most teams playing 12 games apiece. The other three UNCG players played in the Women's Premier Soccer League, which consists of teams all around the country.
Virginia Beach Piranhas (10-1-1, 31 points) – Northeastern Conference Regular Season Champs
Lauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) – Started 11 games at defender for the Piranhas, racking up over 800 minutes. She added an assist and helped the defense secure three shutouts during the regular season. A starting senior defender for the Spartans, Lover helped the Piranhas win the regular season championship.
Lover and the Piranhas will have a chance to win the post-season conference championship when they face the Washington Spirit next weekend. The winner will advance to the 2013 W-League Championship presented by Nike in Bradenton, Florida July 26-28.
Fredericksburg Impact (3-5-4, 13 points)
Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegaite) – Started 11 games for the Impact, finishing second on the team with over 900 minutes. Brown picked up an assist and played several games on defense to help the team finish 2-0-2 in its last four contests.
Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammar School) – Started 10 games for the Impact, picking up a goal on six shots. Burrows, a dangerous midfielder, played 850 minutes to get ready for the fall season.
Jesse McGinley (Truckee, Calif./Truckee) – Started nine games and played in 10 in net for the Impact. McGinley had a breakout summer campaign, earning two shutouts and making 53 saves. In the final game of the season against the Washington Spirit, McGinley made 14 saves - including a couple of game-saving stops in a 1-1 draw.
Atlanta Silverbacks (4-4-2, 14 points)
Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) – Started four games in net for the Silverbacks, posting two shutouts with 20 saves. Simmons made a season-high nine saves in her final game against the VSI Tampa Bay FC in a 6-0 victory.
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL)
Knoxville Lady Force (2-4-3, 9 points)
Ashley Eddleman (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) – Played in seven games in the midfield for the Lady Force. Eddleman will be a sophomore for the Spartans.
Kiah Allen (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy of Knoxville) – Played in six games and earned an assist for the Lady Force. Allen played for the first time since being redshirted for the Spartans last season. Allen is a redshirt freshman for UNCG.
Georgia Revolution (2-4-2, 8 points)
Alexis Thomas (Bishop, Ga./Oconee County) – Started seven games at forward for the Revolution. Thomas tied for the team lead with two goals and four points. The incoming freshman for UNCG also played in the playoffs, falling 2-0 to Alabama FC in the first round.
The Spartans will arrive for pre-season camp on Tuesday, Aug. 6 with the first fitness practice starting Wednesday, Aug. 7. UNCG will host two home exhibition games against Ohio on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 1 p.m. and against ACC foe N.C. State Saturday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m.
