2013 UNCG women's soccer Schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's women's soccer team, coming off a 2012 Southern Conference regular season championship, has released its 2013 schedule that includes a trip to Hawaii to face NCAA tournament participant Washington and host Hawaii.
Led by third-year head coach Steve Nugent, the eight-game non-conference schedule features six teams that earned a spot in their respective conference tournaments. Five of those teams won 10 games or more including PAC-12 member Washington (10-8-3) who received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament last season.
"Our team is very excited about the upcoming 2013 season," said Nugent. "Our non-conference schedule is filled with some very competitive teams with a history of NCAA experience. Opening the season on the road in Hawaii will be a tough challenge against Hawaii and Washington. Our goal every year is to play tough road games early in the season to challenge our team and this year is no different with trips to Hawaii and East Carolina in the first two weeks."
The Spartans, who come into the season as the defending SoCon regular season champs, went 12-7-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the SoCon last year, will host two exhibition contests against Ohio on Aug. 15 and against North Carolina State on Aug. 17, both at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The game against the Wolfpack will be an exhibition doubleheader with the men's soccer team.
UNCG officially opens the 2013 slate on Aug. 23 at the Hawaii Tournament against the host team. The Spartans conclude the trip to Hawaii against Washington on Aug. 25, who finished the season with a No. 44 RPI.
Five days later, the Spartans head to Greenville, N.C. to take part in the ECU Tournament on Aug. 30 against the Pirates. ECU was 10-7-3 last season falling in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament. UNCG also faces UNCW in Greenville on Sept. 1 as the Seahawks won 12 games last season making the CAA Championship game falling to Hofstra.
On Sept. 6, UNCG makes the short trek to face the defending Big South regular season champion High Point Panthers (10-6-6). Last season, the Spartans won a tight 1-0 game at home against High Point.
Two days later, the first regular-season contest at home comes on Sept. 8, when UNCG will host SEC foe Georgia. The Bulldogs (7-11-2) won a tight 1-0 game in double-overtime last season against the Spartans in Athens, Ga.
Next up for UNCG is a home game against Big South member Liberty who went 11-7-3 falling in the Big South quarterfinals last season. The Spartans finish their non-conference schedule with a trip to Harrisonburg, Virginia to face James Madison on Sept. 20.
A week later, UNCG opens Southern Conference play at home against Appalachian State on Sept. 26 before heading to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina on Sept. 29. Last season, the Spartans only loss in conference play came at the hands of the Catamounts in a 1-0 loss at home.
"The SoCon schedule will be both challenging and bittersweet with so many changes ahead for our conference," said Nugent. "We enjoy competing against the likes of Elon, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, and Davidson and we look forward to one more round in 2013."
UNCG will play Francis Marion on the road on Oct. 4 as all SoCon league members will play the Patriots due to the College of Charleston leaving to join the CAA conference. Two days later, the Spartans head to Charleston, S.C. to face The Citadel on Oct. 6.
The Blue and Gold return home for two games against Furman on Oct. 11 and Wofford on Oct. 13, both at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Last season, the Paladins went 7-2-2 in the SoCon with a double-overtime 1-1 tie against the Spartans in Greenville, S.C.
UNCG heads back on the road to face Davidson on Oct. 18 and the SoCon Tournament defending champion Georgia Southern Eagles on Oct. 20 in Statesboro, Ga. The Spartans lost a heartbreaker 1-0 in the last minute of play against the Eagles in the SoCon Tournament last season.
As part of UNCG's homecoming festivities, the women's soccer team will host Samford on Friday, Oct. 25 and Chattanooga Sunday, Oct. 27. The Spartans will wrap up the regular season against rival Elon on Oct. 30 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
"Our goal is to defend our regular season crown and take that next step in winning the SoCon championship and representing UNCG in the NCAA tournament," said Nugent.
The top four seeds host SoCon Championship quarterfinal contests on Nov. 3 before the semifinals and finals take place in Spartanburg, S.C. on Nov. 8 and 10, respectively.
