Simmons Blogs Experience at National Goalkeeping Camp
UNCG freshman Jamie Simmons recently was invited to train at the U.S. Goalkeeping National Training Camp last week. Below is her Blog, talking about her experience and the opportunity to pursue a dream.
I showed up to Chula Vista on Friday afternoon. We immediately had a training session in which we did a lot of foot work with an emphasis on detail and technique. I quickly learned that having the right form was key and so important in our training sessions. On Saturday, we had two training sessions. The first we did some testing like the vertical jump, 40 yard dash and some agility tests. Then we hopped into goal and did some more footwork and shot stopping drills. That afternoon we worked a lot on reading balls coming in behind the defense and coming out for 1V1s. Sunday had two sessions as well. The first consisted of a lot of distribution and playing the ball out of the box. The afternoon was all dealing with crosses and we did some going to goal so we could be in game situations. Our final day was back to the detail basics of technique with shot stopping. We ended with some scrimmages. I loved the training style and layout of all the sessions. The coaches pushed us and gave us all the feedback we needed to be successful in this game and to improve individually.
After every training day we had meetings in which we got to know each other a little more. Our coaches also talked a lot about being on the national team and what it takes to pursue that dream. It is a lot of hard work and dedication. We heard the stories of their experiences from the national team and how their journey was through the process. It was so inspirational and such an amazing experience to learn from the coaches. This experience taught me so much and I am so thankful for that.
The facilities at the Olympic Center in Chula Vista were absolutely amazing. We got to see all the different sports fields and even see some of the players practicing in different sports. We also got to train in the weight room one day. It was huge and so cool inside. Being in that atmosphere really got me pumped up to pursue my dreams of one day competing for a spot on the national team.
The goalkeepers I got the opportunity to meet and train with were awesome. They pushed me in every training session and made me compete at a high level. It was so cool to meet people who have the same interests. We were all very similar and all share a common goal. I learned I will get to play some of them in the college setting, which is really neat. I wouldn't change this opportunity for anything and I look forward to taking everything I learned and applying it to my game here at UNCG.
