UNCG's Cat Barnekow Invited to Philippines Women's National Team Tryouts
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Redshirt-senior defender Cat Barnekow (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) has been invited by the Philippine Football Federation to participate in a training camp with the Philippine National Women's football team.
"We are very excited for Cat and this prestigious opportunity," said head coach Steve Nugent. "Cat is a tremendous player, a tireless worker and will make a great addition to this group of players. Cat has aspired to continue to play at the highest level possible after college and this is a great step in that direction."
Barnekow, a Santa Rosa, Calif. native, is among a pool of players vying for 23 spots on the 2012 LA Vikings Cup squad. The Philippine Women's National Team is coached by Ernest Nierrasat and the training camp will be held at the Titans Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. from Nov. 23- Dec. 2.
"It's very exciting for me to have the opportunity to play soccer beyond college, especially since it will be in my home state and for an international team," said Barnekow. "I am very thankful for this opportunity and have every intention of making the most of it."
The PFF (Philippine Football Federation) will use this pool of players to determine the final roster for the Philippines at the LA Viking Cup as well as future selections to represent the National Team at other upcoming FIFA sanctioned events.
Barnekow, whose mother is of Filipino decent, was a co-captain for the Spartans this season. She earned first team all-SoCon after finishing the season with four goals and a team-leading five assists. She was instrumental in helping UNCG put together a streak of six-straight shutouts, leading to the SoCon regular season title.
