Spartans earn NSCAA Team Academic Award for 10th straight year
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – UNCG's women's soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team Academic Award for the 10th straight season, the NSCAA announced recently.
Coach Steve Nugent's squad turned in a grade point average of 3.41 for the 2010-11 academic year to take the distinction. Ten Spartans earned Academic All-Southern Conference honors for the fall 2010 campaign: Cat Barnekow, Nicole Danford, Katie Durst, Jaimey Etten, Casey Godwin, Jessi Gulledge, Lauren Hein, Kelsey Kearney, Jenn Partenheimer and Stephanie Partenheimer.
UNCG was one of seven Southern Conference schools to earn the award, joining Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Davidson, Elon, Furman and Western Carolina. UNCG posted the highest GPA among SoCon schools.
To earn the NSCAA Team Academic Award, teams must post at least a 3.0 GPA for the academic year. UNCG was one of 571 women's teams across all divisions to earn the honor.
"We are honored to be recognized for the 10th year in a row by the NSCAA for outstanding academic achievement," Nugent said. "Academics are our No. 1 priority here at UNCG, and this award reflects the tremendous commitment that our players have to their education. Our goal is to continue achieving great things within the UNCG community, and this is possible because of the amazing student-athletes that represent us on and off the field."
