SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second-straight day, UNCG took a lead into the bottom of the eighth inning only to see Wofford rally once more and secure a 2-1 victory at Russel C. King Field in the second game of a Southern Conference series. The Terriers improve to 27-25 overall and 9-13 in SoCon play while the Spartans fall to 21-23 and 8-12.

Junior Zac MacAneney (Gibsonville, N.C./Virginia Tech) went 3-for-3 in the contest with a walk and RBI, but UNCG’s 2-5 hitters combined for only two hits in 16 at bats. Junior Jordan McDonald (Perth, Australia/Chattanooga State) chipped in with two hits, including a nice bunt single.

Matt Millburn picked up the win for Wofford, throwing eight innings and giving up one earned run while scattering eight hits and striking out five. Junior Max Povse (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) was equally as strong in a losing effort, scattering seven hits over eight innings pitched with seven strikeouts and just one walk.

The Blue and Gold opened the scoring in the top of the third after freshman Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) doubled with one and out and scored when MacAneney singled to the right center gap.

The contest remained devoid of runs for several innings despite a few threats by both squads. Wofford then delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the eighth. After Povse induced a leadoff groundout, Alec Paradowski and Seth Neely singled to put runners at first and second. James Plaisted proved the hero, sending a ball down the right field line that allowed both runners to cross home plate and give the home side a 2-1 advantage. UNCG would go down in order in the top of the ninth.

The Spartans will attempt to salvage the series finale that is scheduled for 2 p.m. – one hour later than its original start time.
