GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team jumped on top early with five runs and finished with nine hits to take down North Carolina A&T, 7-1, Thursday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans are 13-15 on the season while the Lady Aggies fall to 8-14 on the season.

Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) improved to 3-2 after throwing four innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits. Janika May took the loss throwing a complete game, allowing six earned runs on nine hits.

Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead UNCG at the plate. Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) was 1-for-3 with two RBI and threw three shutout innings in relief.

UNCG scored five runs on three hits to take a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) reached on an error by the left fielder moving to third with no outs. Sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) followed with a RBI single for the first run. Bedwell singled and sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) walked to load the bases. Freshman Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) earned an RBI walk to give UNCG a 2-0 lead. Nicole Thomas lined a two-run single and junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) laid down a RBI sacrifice bunt to make it 5-0 Spartans.

In the top of the second inning, the Lady Aggies cut the lead to 5-1 after a solo home run from Sabrina Edmonds, her fifth of the season.

The Blue and Gold added two more runs in the second inning off four hits. Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) leadoff the inning with a double and Geiner followed with an infield single. After an out, Bedwell roped a RBI single through the infield and Lindsay Thomas earned an RBI double down the left field line to push UNCG’s lead to 7-1.

UNCG improved its all-time record against North Carolina A&T to 39-2 with the victory. The Blue and Gold return for a key three game Southern Conference series against Chattanooga starting with a doubleheader Saturday, Mar. 29 at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
