SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After falling behind 2-0, the UNCG men’s tennis team stormed back to defeat Wofford, 4-3, Sunday indoors at the Westside Club.
The Spartans improve to 9-5, 3-1 in Southern Conference play while Wofford falls to 7-8, 2-2 in the SoCon.
Wofford took an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Haris Poric and Walker Heffron defeated Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) improved to 10-2 on the season with an 8-6 win over Trevor Gotkowski and Rob Galloway. Yet, Wofford was able to steal the point with a win at No. 3 doubles as Jackson Keith and David Sklar beat Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn./Homeschooled) and Jimmy Roueche (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) 8-6.
Wofford took a 2-0 lead in the match as Galloway defeated Sarioglu at No.1 singles 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Phillips brought UNCG back into the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Heffron.
Dougherty tied the match at two with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over Poric at No.2 singles. Dougherty has won six-straight matches to improve to 10-3 in dual matches. Wofford regained the lead as Keith defeated Mack 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles as the Terriers went up 3-2.
Yet at No. 4 singles, Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) tied things up once more at three, with a three set win over Gotkowski. Gotkowski took set one 6-2, but Murray bounced back to take sets two and three 6-4, 6-1.
With the match on the line, Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) took on Parks Thompson at No. 6 singles. Smith took set one 7-6 (7-5) and won the second set, 6-1 to clinch the victory for UNCG.
The Spartans will be back home Wednesday March 26 to take on regional rival Charlotte. The match is slated for 2 p.m. at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
