MIAMI, Fla. – The UNCG women’s tennis team fell to FIU, 6-1, to finish its spring break trip Thursday at the FIU Tennis Courts.
UNCG falls to 3-6 on the season and FIU improves to 5-3.
The Spartans fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point after Florida International won two of the three matches. At No. 3 doubles, Giulietta Boha and Aleks Trifunovic defeated Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), 8-3. The Panthers clinched the point with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles from Tina Mohorcic and Nina Nagode over Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill).
In the final doubles match at No. 2 doubles, senior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleji) and Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) took down Carlotta Orlando and Valentina Briceno, 8-1.
In singles, Boha won in straight sets against Grinberg, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Orlando defeated Anane, 6-3, 5-0 at No. 1 singles to give FIU a 3-0 lead.
At No. 3 singles, Trifunovic won in straight sets against Gammie, 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Panthers. Mohorcic outlasted Franco in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 at No. 4 singles.
Falcon earned the only point for UNCG with a three set win against Nadgode, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 at No. 2 singles. In the final match, sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) lost in three sets to Briceno, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.
The Spartans will head home to host Longwood Sunday, Mar. 16 at noon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
