CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country teams sent a small contingent to Charlotte Friday and raced in the Royals Cross Country Challenge hosted by Queens at McAlpine Park. The men’s race ran on the 8,000-meter course while the women’s race ran on the 5,000-meter course.
Five men’s runners took part in the event with freshman Dakarai Shipp (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) leading the way with a 20th place showing. Shipp posted a time of 27:38.50 and freshman Max Chandler (Kannapolis, N.C./A.L. Brown) turned in a time of 27:48.9 to place 22nd overall. Brian Schoepfer of Duke won the event in a time of 25:09.20.
Rounding out the men’s side was freshman David Guthrie (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) and sophomore John Elwood (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) who placed 27th and 31st, respectively.
On the women’s side, three runner took part in the event with freshman Samiiah (Apex, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) turning in the top time for the Spartans at 19:!5.8 to place 22nd overall. Freshman Katlyn Adkins (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) posted a time of 21:10.4 on the 5,000-meter course to place 36th overall. Sophomore Meredith Hicks (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) finished in a time of 22:05.0, placing 43rd overall. Meredith Miller of South Carolina won the women’s event in a time of 17:03.60.
The Spartans return to action Oct. 19 as they travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-National Invitational run on the same course as the National Championships in November.
