Cross Country Returns To Action At Two Events This Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country programs return to action this week as both squads will split into two events Saturday. The Spartans will send 15 runners to the Virginia Panorama Farms Invitational while 10 runners will go to the Charlotte Invitational.
The Virginia Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville, Va., includes 11 regionally ranked teams. The men's 8K race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 5K race at 10:30 a.m. The Charlotte Invitational is run at McAlpine Creek Park, the host site for last season’s NCAA Southeast Regional race. The meet kicks off at 8:45 a.m. with the women’s 6K “gold” race, with the men’s 8K “gold” event following at 9:20 a.m.
On the men’s side, senior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) headlines the Spartans at the UVA Panorama Farms Invitational. Kemboi placed third at the Elon Invitational, helping the Spartans to a second place team finish as he posted a time of 25:29 in the 8,000-meter race. Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) placed fourth overall at the race with a time of 26:06 while sophomore Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) was sixth with a time of 26:11.
Senior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) and junior Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) will not run in either race this weekend.
On the women’s side, seniors Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) lead the way for the Spartans along with sophomore Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) at UVA. The three runners helped the Spartans win the Elon Invitational meet last time out, edging host Elon in the team standings.
Shaina Sumney earned Southern Conference Runner of the Week accolades for her performance. Sumney returned to action after redshirting last year and won the women’s race with a time of 17:36 in the 5,000-meter race. Saina placed second in the race with a career-best time of 17:39. Her time is over a minute better than her best time last year as a freshman when she turned in a time of 18:47.29 at the Southern Conference Championships.
Chelsea Sumney was the Spartans’ third best finisher as she placed four with a time of 17:47. Sumney won last season’s Elon Invitational title with a time of 17:44, winning by over 34 seconds. Redshirt freshman Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) made her cross country debut after redshirting last fall and placed 10th overall with a time of 18:33.
