GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG cross country programs head down the road to Burlington Saturday for the annual Elon Invitational meet. The women’s 5,000-meter race is set for a 9 a.m. start while the men’s 8,000-meter race will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Last season, the Spartans picked up both individual winners in the race and finished second as a team in both the women’s race and the men’s race. Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) returns to the course where she posted her first career victory last season. Sumney won the event with a time of 17:44, besting her closest competition by 34 seconds. This season, her sister Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) will be back in action after redshirting last fall and will run her senior season this year.

Fellow senior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) was the Spartans’ second-fastest finisher last year as she placed ninth overall with a time of 19:18.

On the men’s side, senior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) picked up his first career victory at Elon as he posted a time of 25:29 in the 8,000-meter course. Kemboi earned Southern Conference Runner of the Week honors for his efforts as he won the men’s race by eight seconds. Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) placed third overall in the field last year with a time of 26:02.

The Spartans will be without senior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) and junior Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) who will sit out the race for the second straight year for training purposes.
