Cross Country Heads To Greater Louisville Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's and women's cross country programs head to Louisville, Ky., Saturday, Sept. 29 for the 2012 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic. The men will run the 8,000 meters, while the women will run the 6,000 meters.
"This will be the first race that we have everybody out there competing, so it will be our first full squad race," said head coach Linh Nguyen. "Louisville hosts the national championship this year, so it's going to be an extremely competitive field. We're just hoping to get out there and see how we look as a full team, and get a really good effort in on a fast course with a lot of good competition."
Running this weekend for the men are three key returners, junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya / Chebiemit Boys School, sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya / Sacho) and junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya / Kipkabus).
Chelimo will face defending cross country national champion Lawi Lalang from Arizona. In the 2011 NCAA cross country national championship, Chelimo placed 13th in the 10,000 meters race with a time of 28:39.1 behind Lalang, who finished with a time of 28:44.1. Katam was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and finished 15th in the NCAA Southeast Regional. Arizona's Stephen Sambu will also run in Louisville this weekend. Sambu was runner up in the 2010 cross country national championship crossing the line at 29:25.5.
Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa. / Trinity), junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C. / West Johnston) and classmate Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) are leading the women's squad.
The Spartans were last in action at the Elon Invitational, Sept. 15 where Kemboi and Sumney both placed first in their races. Overall, the men's and women's teams placed second in the tournament.
The Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic will be underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
