GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) was named the Southern Conference Men's Runner of the Week while also earning SoCon Runner of the Month accolades for his season-debut performance at the Greater Louisville Classic, the league office announced Wednesday.
"Paul had a great race this weekend and proved himself to be one of the better cross country runners in the nation," head coach Linh Nguyen
said. "It's great to for him to be honored by the SoCon as a Runner of the Week for his performance. It was a PR and a school record, bettering the time he ran when he won the conference championship last year."
Chelimo finished third overall at the Louisville Classic in a race that featured numerous nationally-ranked team and the defending NCAA National Champion. He posted a new school record and a career-best time of 22:59.37 in the 8,000-meter race, surpassing his previous mark of 23:11.56 (SoCon Championships, Oct. 29). His time also finished under the previous course record time of 23:08, set in 2007.
Chelimo and the Spartans return to action October 12 as the team will split for the Blue Ridge Open and the Pre-Nationals in Louisville.
