PRE-NATIONALS RACE CENTRAL

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's and women's cross country programs head to Louisville, Ky., for the second time in three weeks this weekend as the Spartans will run the NCAA Division I Pre-National Cross Country meet Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. The Pre-Nationals race is the precursor for the NCAA Division I National Championships held Nov. 17 at Tom Sawyer State Park.

"This weekend is another highly competitive meet in Louisville," head coach Linh Nguyen said. "We want to go out and see how far we have come the last two weeks of training. We want to see what type of improvements the team has made and how we match up against some of the best teams in the country."

The men's program will race in the seeded race starting at 9:30 a.m. The race will feature 40 teams overall and 15 nationally ranked teams, including No. 3-ranked BYU, No. 7 Colorado, No. 9 Tulsa, No. 14 Florida State and No. 15 Oregon. The women's program will run the 45-team unseeded race at 11:30 a.m., facing runners from schools like Louisville, Florida State, Florida, Georgetown and West Virginia.

The men's program returns to the 8,000-meter course where they finished 14th at the Greater Louisville Classic Sept. 29. Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) finished third overall on the course last time, finishing in a school-record time of 22:33.57. Chelimo's time also was under the previous course record at Tom Sawyer State Park and was the fastest time the Southern Conference by over a minute. Sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) posted a time of 24:00.90 to finish seventh at the Greater Louisville, ranking eighth all-time in program history.

The women's program returns to the 5,000-meter course where it finished 29th overall at the Greater Louisville Classic. Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the Spartans with a 40th place finish individually with a time of 17:31.87. Sumney's time is the top time in the SoCon this season by over13 seconds versus her nearest competitor. Junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnson) posted a time of 18:52.15 on the course to finish 194th overall.
