Cross Country Heads To Louisville For Pre-National Race
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's and women's cross country programs head to Louisville, Ky., for the second time in three weeks this weekend as the Spartans will run the NCAA Division I Pre-National Cross Country meet Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. The Pre-Nationals race is the precursor for the NCAA Division I National Championships held Nov. 17 at Tom Sawyer State Park.
The men's program will race in the seeded race starting at 9:30 a.m. The race will feature 40 teams overall and 15 nationally ranked teams, including No. 3-ranked BYU, No. 7 Colorado, No. 9 Tulsa, No. 14 Florida State and No. 15 Oregon. The women's program will run the 45-team unseeded race at 11:30 a.m., facing runners from schools like Louisville, Florida State, Florida, Georgetown and West Virginia.
The men's program returns to the 8,000-meter course where they finished 14th at the Greater Louisville Classic Sept. 29. Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) finished third overall on the course last time, finishing in a school-record time of 22:33.57. Chelimo's time also was under the previous course record at Tom Sawyer State Park and was the fastest time the Southern Conference by over a minute. Sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) posted a time of 24:00.90 to finish seventh at the Greater Louisville, ranking eighth all-time in program history.
The women's program returns to the 5,000-meter course where it finished 29th overall at the Greater Louisville Classic. Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the Spartans with a 40th place finish individually with a time of 17:31.87. Sumney's time is the top time in the SoCon this season by over13 seconds versus her nearest competitor. Junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnson) posted a time of 18:52.15 on the course to finish 194th overall.
