Cross Country Program Earns Multiple National Academic Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's and men's cross country programs were recognized as one of the top academic programs in the country Tuesday earning team and individual honors for the 2012 season from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The women's cross country team earned 2012 All-Academic team honors after posting a stellar 3.69 team GPA, which ranked eighth overall among all of NCAA Division I cross country programs. The Spartans also had the highest team GPA among all Southern Conference teams and the 2012 season marks the fourth straight year UNCG has won team academic honors.
Leading the way for UNCG was redshirt junior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) who picked up All-Academic individual honors. Sumney finished third overall at the SoCon championships and 15th in the NCAA Southeast Regional. She owns a 3.73 cumulative GPA.
The men's cross country team earned 2012 All-Academic team honors for the fourth straight year after posting a 3.27 team GPA. The Spartans were led by junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) and sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho), who both earn All-Academic accolades for the second straight season.
Chelimo owns a 3.68 cumulative GPA and won his second straight SoCon cross country championship last fall. He finished second in the NCAA Southeast Regional and placed 10th in the NCAA National Championship to earn All-America honors. Katam picked up his second straight honor with a 3.42 GPA after placing second at the SoCon championships. He finished fifth overall at the NCAA Southeast Regional to earn his first-ever bid into the NCAA Championships where he placed 77th overall.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2012.
