Paul Chelimo Named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG cross country junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) has been named the Southern Conference Student Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Chelimo holds a 3.80 GPA in pre-nursing and was named the SoCon Runner of the Year after winning his second straight Southern Conference Cross Country Championship. He pulled away from his competition early in the race at the Laurel Hill Plantation in Mount Pleasant, S.C., Saturday finishing in a time of 23:42.22 in the 8,000-meter race. He won the race by 15 seconds over his closest competitor and 53 seconds over his closest non-UNCG competitor.
Chelimo has won the only two SoCon Championships in UNCG cross country history. He has the three fastest times this season by any SoCon runner, including a sub-23 minute 8,000-meter time at the Greater Louisville Classic.
