GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) was named the Southern Conference Men's Runner of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. Katam is the third different UNCG cross country runner to earn weekly honors this year joining the ranks of Paul Chelimo and Abraham Kemboi.

Katam ran a personal-best in the 8,000-meter race at the prestigious Pre-Nationals event in Louisville, Ky., at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park as he finished 24th overall in a time of 23:49.9. He bested his previous personal-record by almost 10 seconds and became one of just two SoCon runners this year to break the 24-minute mark in the 8,000-meter race, joining teammate Chelimo.

Katam helped the Spartans place 28th in the Pre-Nationals event that included 15 teams ranked in the top 40 in the nation. The race was also run on the same course as the 2012 NCAA national championships later this season.

Katam and the Spartans return to action Oct. 27 as they look to defend their Southern Conference championship title in Charleston, S.C.
