GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s cross country team posted nine personal-records in two events Saturday as the Spartans took part in the UVA/Panorama Farms Invitational and the Charlotte Invitational. Six student-athletes set new top times at Panorama Farms while three turned in new marks at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, both at the 8,000-meter distance.
Senior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) posted the top time for the Spartans, placing 63rd at the UVA race with a time of 25:13.3. The Spartans’ top two runners, Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) and Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho), did not race in either event Saturday.
Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) was the first Spartan to set a new personal-record as he placed 68th with a time of 25:25.7, trimming over 25 seconds off his previous top time. Sophomore Josh Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) cut 19 seconds from his top time, placing 86th in a time of 25.57.2.
Additionally, Brandon Cain (Graham, N.C./Coker College), Patrick O’Grady (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity), Max Bergstrom (Asheville, N.C./A.C. Reynolds) and Jason Barber (King, N.C./West Stokes) all turned in new personal-best times at Panorama Farms as the Spartans placed 13th in the team standings.
At Charlotte, three of the Spartans’ four runners set new marks, surpassing their previous top times set last time out at the Elon Invitational. JT Booker (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oak) turned in a time of 27:39.30 to place 72nd while David Guthrie (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) and Max Chandler (Kannapolis, N.C./A.L. Brown) recorded new top times at 28:18.00 and 28:18.90, respectively.
The Spartans return to action Oct. 11 as they take part in the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte.
