Women's Tennis Defeats USC Upstate, 6-1
GREENSBORO, N.C.- The UNCG women’s tennis team earned its first victory of the spring with a 6-1 win against USC Upstate Sunday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans earned the doubles point first and a point due to forfeit at No. 6 singles to go up 2-0 early in the match. Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. /Broward Virtual School) and Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./ Clover) defeated Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Yasmin Franco(Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian)and Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./ East Chapel Hill) took down Sarah Vande berg and Anna Zoske 6-2 as well.
On the singles side, Gammie wrapped up first after defeating Zoske 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to give UNCG a 3-0 lead.
USC Upstate earned its only point of the match in a three set thriller at No. 1 singles. Senior Stephanie Falcons (Marietta, Ga./Walton) took set one 6-4, but Stryk took set two 6-1. Stryk won the super tiebreaker, 10-4, in the third set.
At No. 3 singles, Franco defeated Rojas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.Sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) played at No. 5 singles and took down Lindsey Buenger 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 4 singles, Grinbeg beat VandeBerg 6-0, 6-1 to earn UNCG’s sixth point of the afternoon.
The Spartans will be back at it Sunday, February 16 when they welcome in UNCW atnoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
