Men's Tennis Sweeps NCCU, 7-0
GREENSBORO, N.C.-The UNCG men’s tennis team captured their first victory of the season with a sweep of the North Carolina Central Eagles 7-0 Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans captured the first point of the day with two victories in doubles. James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) took down Daniil Gerasimov and Will East 6-0 at the first doubles slot. At number two doubles, Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and Danny Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) defeated Tamina Kienka and Stephan Charles-Donatien 6-2.
UNCG won all six singles matches and won five of the six in straight sets. The matchup at number one singles went to a tiebreaker, as Sarioglu faced off against Gerasimov. Sarioglu took set one 6-4 and Gerasimov took set two 6-4. Sarioglu won the tiebreaker 10-3 to earn the victory.
Dougherty played Charles-Donatien at No. 2 singles and won 6-1, 6-4. Phillips only lost three games to Kienka with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Mack took care of East 6-3, 6-3 at the four singles slot. Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) played at the No. 5 singles spot and also only dropped three games in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Thomas Perisco. James Flynn (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) won 6-5 (6), 6-3 against Fabrice George in the six singles spot.
With the win, the Spartans sit 1-2 on the season. UNCG doesn’t have much time to rest as the will be back on the courts Sunday afternoon with another group of Spartans in town. UNCG and USC Upstate will play at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro Sunday at noon.
