Women's Track and Field Sets DMR Record At Hilton Garden Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG women's track and field team concluded play at the Hilton Garden Invitational Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. The Spartans' efforts were highlighted by the distance medley relay team which won the event with a facility record time of 12:14.22.
The Spartans won the relay event by 23 seconds over their nearest competitor, Christopher Newport. Running for UNCG were Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity), freshman Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) and junior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point).
Montague pulled a double duty on the event as she placed ninth in the top heat of the 5,000-meter race. She turned in a time of 18:42.31, her top time at the distance during the indoor season.
Freshman Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) ran the mile race and posted a time of 5:26.89. Classmate Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) also ran the mile for the first time, recording a time of 5:27.64
The Spartans return to action next weekend as a majority of the team will travel to the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Sumney will head to Seattle, Wash., to take part in the prestigious Flotrack Husky Classic.
